In the search for a supply chain partner capable of assisting with long-term die and wafer banking to support the lifecycle of their products, Intuitive Surgical selected EDX and their Critical Inventory Storage solution.
After a formal site visit and audit of the EDX facility in Winter Springs, FL., Intuitive Surgical selected EDX for their critical die and wafer banking needs for a 10-year term.
A pioneer in surgical robotics, Intuitive Surgical is the creator of the daVinci® surgical system, which over 20 years has evolved into what many healthcare providers now consider the gold standard of minimally invasive surgery platforms. Since its introduction, the daVinci® system has been responsible for over five million surgeries, and more than 44,000 surgeons in over 66 countries have been trained on the platform.
To support these platforms, however, Intuitive Surgical relies on high quantities of raw die and wafer at the point of assembly. While raw die is used to create specialized ICs to power the daVinci® systems and can be stored for long periods of time, it is also highly sensitive to moisture. To ensure that the die remains in optimal condition until needed, it is imperative that it be stored in cabinets specially designed for moisture-sensitive materials.
EDX goes a step beyond the industry standard for such equipment by offering customers the ability to store their die and wafer in desiccant dry storage cabinets. EDX’s dry cabinets utilize zeolite to achieve — and maintain — a relative humidity of 0.5 percent with a recovery time of under three minutes. Standard nitrogen-infused cabinets, by comparison, can only achieve a relative humidity between six and 10 percent with a 10-12 minute recovery time. This type of critical inventory is also stored in the indestructible EDX Vault, another level of security to provide best-in-class business continuity for customers who have irreplaceable components.
Such advanced equipment specifications mean that nothing stands in the way of EDX customers retrieving their inventory whenever it is needed, with no considerations for recovery time required. EDX will store as much inventory as the customer requires for as long as needed — even over 20 years — as well as package and ship it anywhere in the world at the customer’s request. All die and wafer handling and packaging is done by a team of highly trained storage specialists in accordance to the strictest IPC and ISO-certified standards.
“We are proud to have Intuitive Surgical participating in our long-term die and wafer banking solution, and are honored to play a role in a supply chain responsible for saving and improving so many lives around the world” – Michael Carpino, Vice President of Sales & Operations at EDX Electronics.
